inable tourism, we need to protect the cultural environment as well as the natural environment. We need to respect local cultures and ways of life, and contribute positively to local communities.

The potential negative effects of tourism are both local and global… but if we practice sustainable tourism, we can keep the negative effects to a minimum.

If we’re not careful, we’ll degrade the environment and the cultures we travel to see. Where ever we travel, we need to keep in mind that the local people have to profit from our visit. If you go someplace because there are wonderful native handicrafts, you need to buy some of those handicrafts from locals, so they get the money.

If you’re visiting a national park, you need to employ locals as guides so they will continue to value and protect the park. Those are the kinds of things that make for sustainable tourism.

Here are some more things to think about when choosing a hotel, a tour group or activity…..

Is the hotel locally owned and operated so that the profits stay in the community? If not, is it at least staffed by local employees?

How does the hotel contribute to the local community? Do they buy local produce for their restaurant? Do they sell local handicrafts in their gift shop?

If you’re taking a tour, travel with a tour operator who is environmentally responsible. Smaller group sizes make less of an impact… and make for a more enjoyable tour for you!

Is the group lead by a local guide?

Does the tour company contribute to the local community in some way? To have sustainable tourism, the local community needs to benefit; not just some global tour company.

When hiking, stay on marked trails. Maintain safe distances from any wildlife you encounter… for your safety AND for theirs. “Leave only footprints”… carry your trash out or use trash bins.

If you’re snorkeling or diving, don’t touch the coral. Be careful with your fins, it’s easy to kick the coral if you’re not paying attention or to stir up sediment. Either way you can damage the reef’s fragile ecosystem… and most reefs are in trouble now, so they need all of our help.

Try to buy local products… You’ll support the local economy… and we all need that now no matter what country you’re visiting. Foods will be fresher, give you a taste of local cuisine and save fuel because they haven’t traveled half way around the world… only YOU have! Fewer imported products will be needed.

Don’t buy souvenirs or other products made from endangered animals or plants. You probably can’t get it through customs, and if you believe in sustainable tourism, you don’t want to contribute to the extinction of another species!

Treat locals with respect. You went there to learn about their culture! Learn a few words… at least hello, good-bye and thank you. Be open to our cultural differences. Read up on the area you’ll be visiting so you’ll know how to dress so you don’t offend anyone. Check to see if there are any behaviors or gestures that will offend your hosts.

Rejoice in our positive differences. Support them, and you’ll be contributing to sustainable tourism.

It is quiet natural for one to be stunned by the recent research which is made by climate scientists of Centre for Alternative Technology as well as elsewhere, because all of us slowly begin to know the impact which our privileged standard of living has up on this planet as well as its individuals.

Disturbing forecast are inclusive of doomsday circumstances like flooding, increasing of sea level, chaotic as well as devastating critical weather which causes failure of crops and the water borne infection is spread widely and due to over exposure of UV, the skin cancer can be caused. Like these frightening situations have too much of chances to turn in to reality, in our life span, if our consumption of energy as well as emissions of pollution aren’t sincerely limited.

The industry of aviation is considered to be rapid developing resource of climate altering green house gases and well Britain is actually accountable for further discharge from the air travels than the other nation. All of us adore travelling, however by keeping these realities in our minds, it is turning to be complicated by imaging to fly off on well deserved foreign vacation having no severe reason for concern. But the developing industry of ecological and ethical sustainable tourism provides exciting, diverse, adventurous vacations that could decline impact or also be advantageous to the surrounding instead of wasting the resources as well as causing damage. Guided cycling and walking trips, for example, are considered to be a fine mode to view spectacular landscapes as w

ell as gain more knowledge regarding plants and wild life while detonating to the localised country in a dependable, fairly way.

Solar powered and independent B&BS are bouncing in the dreamy destination such as Normandy and Portugal. Are you searching for something which is even more adventurous? Then what do you thing about the cross nation skiing which is in Norway or dog sledding which is in Finland or else sea kayaking as well as diving – off Croatia. There’re countless inspirational places in Europe that could be reached easily by train or sea or else through Euro-star. One night in the cabin of the ferry which is heading to Scandinavia or else could opt for the luxurious and most comfy train hotels that cover Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France and many other places could be an thrilling, exciting experience getting back few traditional romance while travelling. Extensive haul over land travel pays for distinctive chances to view this world, just two things you need, one is a backpack as well as tent, you are all set for this trip, you can go any where you want in the way. Anywhere means you could just go about anywhere. There exists also the adventure travel company which provides twelve weeks overland trip throughout the twenty countries, say from London – Sydney.

Eco tourism, sustainable living isn’t considered to be too expensive, in fact you might be really astonished by the inferior financial expense for living in an inferior environment impact. To know more about Eco – Tourism, you can refer http://www.EarthAttic.com/blog/main or http://www.EarthAttic.com/dignews/

Figures just released show a fall in the number of visitors to Malta for the first six months of 2006 compared to the same period last year, adding pressure to the Malta government to secure a deal to allow low cost airlines to fly to the Mediterranean island to reverse the trend.

The fall of 2.4 per cent of visitors included a decrease in the important British, French and German markets, but a very welcome increase in Italian tourists.

Commenting on the news one local travel guide said that ‘if it hadn’t been for the increase in visitors from Italy it would have been far worse. The UK, Germany and France still account for nearly two in three holidaymakers coming to Malta, and if these markets decline further the island will become less and less attractive to the tour operators to promote’.

Rumours in the island’s tourism industry earlier this year suggested that one of the major UK tour operators was considering pulling Malta out of their holiday brochures, which could have led to others taking the same action, but so far these rumours have not become reality. If they were it would have a major impact on Malta’s economy.

Unemployment is running at over 8 per cent in Malta, and tourism is a major industry and employer.

The Malta hotel industry was particularly badly affected by the drop of visitors for January to June, with a near three per cent drop compared to 2006.

Malta Hotels

The Malta travel guide also commented on the delay in the introduction of low cost ai

rlines to Malta and the possibility from that of an increase in tourist numbers.

With worrying signs that the number of tourists for the whole of 2006 visiting Malta could be similar, or perhaps even down from 2005, the opportunity for the island to have low cost flights operating from the UK appears to have slipped by for the all important summer season.

The island’s official airline, Air Malta, reported a drop of over two per cent in the number of passengers it carried in the year from March 2005 to March 2006.

The hope among hoteliers and others involved in Malta’s tourist trade is that at least one of the low cost airlines will start operating from the UK and perhaps other parts of Europe in the near future to boost visitor numbers.

‘With the holiday market vital to the Malta economy,’ comment the guide, ‘potentially millions in lost revenue will be lost this year because of delays in agreeing to allow the low cost airlines to fly into Malta. In today’s world Malta has to compete with new destinations in Europe as well as Spain and her islands. Cheap Malta flights aren’t in themselves enough to sustain tourism at reasonable levels anymore, although this will be welcome, but the trick of sustained tourism is to have repeat business, and unless Malta attracts new first time visitors then repeat business is an impossibility’.

The small state of Kerala, which represents just 1% of the land mass, is considered to be one of India’s most beautiful state. It is a very rural state with most of the population living in villages but is culturally and scenically diverse. Kerala Tourism has two national parks, ten wildlife sanctuaries and two bird sanctuaries.Kerala occupies a long (550km), narrow strip of land in the far south of India. Its coastline is on the Arabian Sea (part of the Indian Ocean) and its eastern border with the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu is the top of the majestic Western Ghat mountains. The landscape varies from long golden beaches to cool hill stations and dense green jungle to bustling cities. Its unique feature is the 1,900km of palm fringed Kerala backwaters.

In 2006, Kerala Tourism attracted 8.5 million tourists–an increase of 23.68% in foreign tourist arrivals compared to the previous year, thus making it one of the fastest growing tourism destination in the world.Popular attractions in the state include the beaches at Kovalam, Cherai and Varkala, the hill stations of Munnar, Nelliampathi, Ponmudi and Wayanad; and national parks and wildlife sanctuaries at Periyar and Eravikulam National Park. The ” Kerala backwaters” region—an extensive network of interlocking rivers, lakes, and canals that centre on Alleppey, Kumarakom, and Punnamada—also see heavy tourist traffic. Heritage sites, such as the Padmanab

hapuram Palace, Hill Palace, Mattancherry Palace are also visited. Cities such as Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are popular centres for shopping and traditional theatrical performances. The state’s tourism agenda promotes ecologically sustained tourism, which focuses on the local culture, wilderness adventures, volunteering and personal growth of the local population. Efforts are taken to minimise the adverse effects of traditional tourism on the natural environment, and enhance the cultural integrity of local people.

By: Michael Christodoulou
Green is a word we constantly hear on a daily basis, and for a very valid reason. With all the environmental challenges that affect our planet, governments, companies and consumers are becoming more and more aware of the issues and the many ways to improve our current situation.

We all know that the Travel Industry is rapidly growing and at the same time changing. The impact it leaves on the tourist destinations and the planet in general is up to us and you, the travel consumer.

As a Destination Management Company, we at Olympus Tours are committed to promote and respect the most valuable assets Mexico has to offer: from the amazing diving in Cozumel, the spectacular turquoise waters and archeological sites of the Mayan Riviera and newly renovated Cancun, to Mexico City’s architecture and culture, and all the way to the perfect combination of Vallarta’s green mountains overlooking the Pacific, to the breathtaking sunsets of Los Cabos.

The following are some of the practices we implement as an Ecotourism and Sustainable tourism conscious company:

•	Spread the financial benefits amongst local people and suppliers.

•	Provide employment and leadership opportunities for local people.

•	Respect and most importantly promote local customs and culture.

•	Provide safe trips for our guests.

•	Limit the physical impact of trips in all destination communities-particularly sensitive natural and cultural environments.

•	Provide support to organizations and local communities.

•	Promote opportunities for guests to interact with local people.

•	Discourage the participation of our guests in activities which exploit animals – wild or domestic.

•	Work to prevent the exploitation of children in tourism.

•	Support and encourage fair employment practices.

•	Promote activities and excursions with suppliers that share our philosophy on Social Responsibility – most of Riviera Maya tours, and some of Cancun tours offered are focused on Ecotourism.

•	Recommend hotels and establishments with green practices – most of the hotels in Playa del Carmen and in general Riviera Maya hotels are eco-friendly.

•	Recycle everything possible in all our offices through out Mexico

•	Reduce energy consumption in all our offices.

We invite you to make a positive contribution to the sustainable future of travel, the environment, and local cultures and economies around the world.

make a difference:

be aware and respectful of the culture and traditions of the place you are visiting, as well as be conscious of how you can help protect any endangered species in the region you are vacationing. Here are some tips you might want to consider:

•	Buy locally made souvenirs

•	Help preserve local wildlife and habitats – do not damage flowers, plants or coral, and do not buy products made from endangered plants or animals.

•	Do not have pictures taken of your self with animals of endangered species under captivity for commercial purposes such as monkeys, parrots and other exotic species.

•	Use water wisely – showers instead of baths, and inform hotel staff if you are happy to re-use towels and linen rather than have them changed daily.

•	Save energy – always turn off air conditioning, lights and TVs when not in use.

•	Learn about the culture and customs of the areas you visit.

•	Be sensitive about the cultural differences – in some cases very significant – of the locals

* What is Ecotourism?

Ecotourism is a type of Sustainable tourism that emphasizes conserving nature and improving the lives of local people in rural and wilderness areas.

** What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism is not just limited to areas of ecological significance, but actively aims to reduce negative impacts in general for urban, rural, and wilderness areas. Sustainable tourism looks at the needs of the present, but also focuses on current actions that can reduce negative impacts in the long run. It promotes economic viability, socio-cultural sensibility, and environmental sustainability at destinations of natural and cultural significance in both mass tourism and various niche tourism segments.

Ask any person on the street which industry earns New Zealand the most amount of money and 9 times out of 10 you are bound to hear ‘Dairy’. However a little known fact is that the dairy industry is second to the tourism industry in terms of earning foreign exchange.

In 2007, international tourists spent $8.8billion(1) on our shores. During the same time we exported $7.3billion(1) worth of dairy products. So if international tourists are so important to our economy, what does its future hold with the cost of air travel increasing and the need to reduce carbon emissions?

We are an isolated country and a long-haul destination from all of our major tourist markets baring Australia. It has always cost visitors more to get to us than other possible destinations. This limits the volume of people who are able to travel here. On top of this, add to the traveller’s decision process the impact of air travel on their carbon footprint and we have significant obstacles to overcome in our efforts to attract international visitors.

New Zealand has always had a ‘clean green’ image and the major attraction for international visitors is our array of unspoilt natural landscapes. This is the theme of Tourism New Zealand’s (TNZ) 100% Pure NZ marketing campaign. However many of the service providers that tourists use have not been living up to this ‘clean green’ image. In order to minimise the carbon footprint international visitors create during their visit and help mitigate the environmental impact of their air travel t

o NZ, TNZ has identified the need for our industry to deliver a sustainable experience for our visitors. This has been outlined by TNZ and the Government in the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 (NZTS 2015). Tourism relies more than any other sector on our countries continuing sustainability as a nation. This is because New Zealand itself is the product we are selling internationally. Sustainability involves delivering the maximum benefit – economic, social, cultural, and environmental – with as few unwanted effects as possible ensuring the future of the industry and our environment(2).

The most significant development our industry has had since the publication of the NZTS 2015 is the development of the world’s first integrated environmental performance and quality assurance system – Qualmark Green. Qualmark (www.qualmark.co.nz) is TNZ’s official independent mark of quality and now every Qualmark accredited accommodation provider, visitor activity and transport provider, visitor service and venue is assessed on their environmental performance and required to meet a set of minimum standards. Those that excel receive either a bronze, silver or gold accreditation which they can promote alongside their quality rating.

Furthermore, the small South Island tourist town of Kaikoura (famous for whale watching) has been extremely proactive with regards to sustainability. In 2004 Kaikoura became the first local authority in the world to achieve Green Globe 21 Certification. Green Globe (www.ec3global.com) is a global benchmarking and certification process for sustainable travel and tourism. Kaikoura District Council created an environmental and social policy action plan using Green Globe’s guidelines, reduced its solid waste output through a zero waste scheme which has saved the district thousands of dollars, and introduced a carbon offset scheme to ensure that their carbon footprint is dramatically reduced. The certification has become a unique selling point for Kaikoura as a destination which has resulted in increased visitation.

Initiatives such as these show how New Zealand is leading the way with sustainable tourism. It is ensuring that those involved in the industry live the clean green image our international visitors expect. And due to the breadth of the industry throughout NZ, sustainable values are reaching all communities around the country.

1: Tourism Satellite Account – 2007

2: New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015

Sustainable Tourism is a new way to spend more environmentally friendly holidays, taking care of the impact of travel and tourism on the environment and local communities. Its destinations are flora, fauna, and cultural heritage as the primary attractions. Ecotourism wants above all to sensitize people with the beauty and the fragility of nature. Italy Bike Hotels are engaged and have some answers...

Waiting for the confirmation of the increment of foreign tourist flows to Italy, looking at the positive data (+4%) of 2007, it is interesting to underline that the Bel Paese hospitality, focuses its attention on the analysis of a new phenomenon called “sustainable tourism”.

Sustainable means a new tourism, far away from the conventional tourist destinations, slow mobility, special attention to the relationship between tourism and nature, in order to realize a new equilibrium between man and nature, following strategies of harmony and respect of environment. It aims to promote cultural, historical and artistic peculiarities of the territory.

People run away from the most crowded tourist destinations, and Green Tourism is able to offer something easy, back-country, natural reserves, parks, cycling routes and trekking paths. Investments in Green Tourism, are something new and positive for Italian tourism market innovation. Useful interventions can be done promoting and qualify natural landscapes, rural atmospheres, artistic and archaeological heritage and local gastronomic tradition.

This innovative tourist offer brings hospitality business to get specialized and to increase facilities dedicated to the tourist target interested in sport and wellness holidays. Its target is constantly increasing both, in age range and social rank. Of course the main purpose is to increase tourist flows, splitting arrivals in all seasons and diversifying the offer following the rhythms of the seasons.

The sustainable tourism enrich

es small countrysides and creates new professional jobs, tied to the planning, the realization, the promotion and then the management of ecotourism, cyclotourism and green tourism business. From the north to the south of Italy, the most important sustainable tourism plans are born, to create new tourist flows, where the conventional mass tourism has no interest and have been financed by European Found for the valorization and the recovery of national heritage.

The tourists of the green are constantly increasing and appreciate the idea to move by foot or by bicycle. In order to answer to these new trends, hospitality structures increase the services to the customers, offering bicycle for rent, expert guides for single or groups, distributing brochures about cycling maps and routes, availability of specialistic laundry for sportswear.

All hotels take care about good food, sport menus and always assure rich biological meals, in season and OGM free.

The modern society of the consumptions needs to slow down and to simplify daily life, the Italy Bike Hotels have collected the challenge and offers their answer.

This article will provide a brief overview about the historical background, importance, concepts, principles and general debates about sustainable tourism.

Sustainable tourism is one of the pre-requisites of achieving sustainable development. the concept of tourism with sustainability and development gets its historical inclusion from mass tourism that got flourished in 1960s due to advent of jet aircraft and the passions for tourism got tremendous following and it also reached Third World countries (Dann, 2002). It was also argued that this boost pushed organizations like World Bank and UN to examine the cost benefit analysis of tourism and it was acknowledged that potential costs of tourism are far lower than financial benefits in shape of balance pf payment surpluses, infrastructure development, and employment and foreign exchange gains. So that gave rise to the concept of sustainable tourism as one of the source of bringing sustainable development. According to the World’s Summit on Sustainable Development (2002), it is claimed that Tourism is the world’s largest industry where in 2000, 698 million people travelled internationally which 7.3 % more than 1999. Similarly the economic worth of international tourism was US$477.9 billion in 2000 (Papers4you.com, 2006).

In terms of one concrete definition, literature suggests that it is not fixed and is ever evolving. However Coccossis (1996) asserts that sustainable tourism can be taken in four different interpretations that include” economic sustainability of tourism”

, the “ecologically sustainable tourism”,” sustainable tourism development” with both focus of environment as well as long term feasibility of the industry and finally “tourism as a part of a strategy for sustainable development”.

As mentioned above, sustainable tourism should be taken in consideration to environmental and resources effects. It was argued that Mediterranean tourism is the main source of economic gain for the reason however short term growth was overlooked with long term adverse effect and deterioration of their ecosystem and resources (Farsari, 2000)

Effects of ignorant tourism on its sustainability include: ‘over consumption of natural resources ,environmental degradation, exploitation of cultures and labour, displacement of people from their land, lack of consultation with local communities, poorly thought out tourism planning and high foreign exchange leakage which reduces local economic benefits’ in long run (World’s Summit on Sustainable Development, 2002),

Where such effects are there to pose a threat on sustainable tourism there are guiding principles that can lead to ensure sustainability (Papers4you.com, 2006). Those principles include sustainable use of resources, waste and over-consumption reduction, diversity maintenance, tourism-planning integration, local economy support as well as local community involvement, consultation, training, research and responsible marketing (Farsari, 2000)

So the discussion suggest that tourism industry has potential to be a prerequisite for sustainable development, however it is imperative to realize that focus on mass tourism only can pose danger to environment so in order to ensure sustainability in tourism, guiding principles should be followed

References

Coccossis, H.
